Edo State Holds Governorship Election, Results Show APC Leading

Tensions ran high in Nigeria’s Edo State on Saturday as voters headed to the polls to elect their next governor. TheIndependent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is leading in the total results of the election, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labor Party (LP) trails behind.

According to unofficial results from all 18 local government areas (LGA), the APC gained 11 LGAs against the PDP’s seven. APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, secured 291,667 votes, leaving PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo behind with 247,274 votes, while Labor Party candidate Olumide Akpata garnered 18,737 votes.

Breaking down the results, LGAs showed a clear shift towards the APC. However, PDP still gained significant support, particularly in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, which saw 26,382 votes in favor of PDP.

The winner will take over Osadebe House, the seat of government in Edo State, from outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The 2.2 million registered voters with permanent voter cards across the state’s 18 LGAs and 4,519 polling units were the deciding factor. The INEC is set to officially announce the results, with the returning officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, yet to declare the winner.

With the APC expected to claim victory, expectations are high for the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo. The winner will be officially announced soon, but so far, the results reflect a significant shift towards the APC in Edo State.
