Fresh Ultimatum Issued to Nigerian Government by ASUU
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to resolve pending issues, following its frustration with the government’s lack of commitment and delay tactics. The ultimatum, which started on Monday, September 23, 2024, is an extension of the earlier 21-day deadline.
In a statement on Wednesday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke emphasized the union’s concerns, stating that the government’s inaction has led to a stalemate in negotiations. The union has been pushing for better working conditions, improved salaries, and increased funding for public universities.
The statement reads: “In view of the foregoing, ASUU resolves to give the Nigerian Government another 14 days, in addition to the earlier 21 days, beginning from Monday, September 23, 2024, during which all the lingering issues must have been concretely addressed to the satisfaction of the membership of the union. The union should not be held responsible for any industrial disharmony that arises from the government’s failure to seize the new opportunity offered by ASUU to nip the looming crisis in the bud.”
The union’s decision comes as a response to the government’s failure to address the union’s demands, which have been pending for several months. The situation has raised concerns about the future of Nigeria’s higher education sector, with many students and staff members calling for immediate action to resolve the impasse.
As the deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether the government will take the necessary steps to address ASUU’s concerns and prevent a potentially disastrous outcome. The world is watching as the two parties engage in a high-stakes standoff that could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s education system.
