An early‑morning fire razed a building containing three‑bedroom flats and three shops after a suspected power surge. The incident occurred at about 3:24 a.m. in Oko‑Erin, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, according to a statement from Head of Media, Kwara Fire Service, Mr. Hakeem Hassan.
Upon arriving at the scene, fire officials found the entire structure engulfed in flames, a situation exacerbated by a delayed call from a sympathiser. Despite the magnitude of the blaze, the firemen displayed a high level of professionalism and extinguished the inferno quickly. They also dampened the surrounding area to prevent further escalation.
The leading officer of the fire crew confirmed that the fire was caused by a power surge. Director of Kwara Fire Service, Mr. Falade Olumuyiwa, urged citizens to develop the habit of switching off electrical appliances before bedtime, noting that this practice can help prevent and significantly reduce fire incidents in homes.
Mrs. Bukola Benjamin, the owner of the burnt shops, estimated the loss of goods and property at about N5 million. She appealed to the government and compassionate Nigerians for assistance, emphasizing that the shops were her sole source of livelihood.
