Tragedy Strikes Off Tunisia’s Coast as Migrant Boat Sinks, Leaving 15 Dead

A devastating maritime disaster has unfolded off the coast of Djerba, Tunisia, as a migrant boat sank on Monday, claiming the lives of 15 people. The death toll has risen to 15 after three bodies were recovered on Monday evening, in addition to the 12 bodies found earlier in the day.

The search and rescue operation, which involved the Coast Guard of the Southern Region, the Djerba and Zarzis maritime zones, the Civil Protection, and the National Army, has been ongoing since the boat sank. Four diving teams and a helicopter belonging to the General Directorate of the Maritime Guard have been participating in the efforts, which will resume on Tuesday morning after a night’s pause.

The tragedy has left many families grieving, with the victims including children and women. The authorities have identified two organizers of the irregular migration operation, who are currently on the run, and are working to identify a third person connected to the incident.

A judicial investigation has been launched into the attempt to leave Tunisia illegally, according to a judicial source. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and risks faced by migrants attempting to flee their homelands in search of a better life.

As the search for survivors continues, the international community is left to mourn the loss of lives and to call for greater efforts to address the root causes of migration and to ensure the safety of those who are forced to flee their homes.
