Breast Cancer Education in Nigeria: A Call for Improvement

Dr. Yewande Omikunle, a primary healthcare consultant, has emphasized the need for a comprehensive health policy reform to improve breast cancer education in Nigeria. As the Director of Public Affairs at Sarah Ayoka Oduwaiye Foundation (SAOF Cancer Charity), Dr. Omikunle expressed concern that despite efforts to raise awareness, some communities in the country remain inadequately informed about the disease.

Breast cancer is a significant health challenge in Nigeria, where many women succumb to the disease, often diagnosed in its late stages. The lack of knowledge, deeply ingrained cultural and religious beliefs, and various barriers impede regular breast cancer screening, contributing to alarming mortality rates among Nigerian women.

To address this issue, the SAOF cancer charity has embarked on public awareness campaigns, dispelling myths, providing factual information, and advocating for increased access to affordable and convenient screening services across Nigeria. Dr. Omikunle stressed the importance of fostering a culture of openness, education, and proactive healthcare to reduce the burden of breast cancer mortality and improve the quality of life for all Nigerian women.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds, Dr. Omikunle called for collective action to break down barriers, raise awareness, and advocate for early detection and access to quality care. She emphasized the need for stronger government intervention and support to bolster existing initiatives and ensure that breast cancer education reaches every corner of Nigeria.

The fight against breast cancer requires a collaborative effort from government, civil society, and individuals. By working together, we can strive towards a future where every woman has the knowledge, resources, and support needed to detect breast cancer early and receive quality care.
