Israel-Iran Crisis: US Calls for Proportional Response
In the wake of Iran’s major missile attack on Israel, the United States has urged its ally to exercise restraint and respond proportionately. US President Joe Biden, who consulted with G7 leaders after the attack, emphasized that Israel has a right to respond but must do so in a way that avoids escalating the situation.
According to the State Department, US officials have been working closely with their Israeli counterparts to discourage a full-scale military response. "Israel has a right to respond… and we are going to continue to discuss with them what that response might look like, but we don’t want to see any action that would lead to a full-blown regional war," said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
The Israeli government, meanwhile, seems to be weighing its options. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under pressure to take action in response to the attack, which claimed the lives of several top Iranian-backed militants. Netanyahu’s predecessor, Naftali Bennett, has called for a decisive strike to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities and cripple the "terrorist regime."
Experts believe that a US attempt to influence Israel’s response is a key factor in the current standoff. Sina Toossi, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, noted that Israel responded with limited strikes during a previous Iran-Israel crisis in April, thanks in part to US pressure.
The White House has also been cautious in its dealings with Israel, with Biden opting not to make immediate contact with Netanyahu. This has led some to question the extent of US influence over its Israeli ally. However, Biden has downplayed the importance of personal contact, stating that "we’ve been talking to Bibi’s people the whole time."
As tensions continue to escalate, officials on both sides are warning of the devastating consequences of a full-blown war. The region is on high alert, with Iranian Revolutionary Guards threatening further missile attacks and Israel preparing its military for potential retaliation.
The fate of the region hangs in the balance as Israel and Iran engage in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Will Netanyahu seize the opportunity to strike deep into Iranian territory, or will Washington’s influence help to forestall a broader conflict? Only time will tell.
