Benue Governor Inaugurates New Local Government Chairmen, Calls for Accountability and Transparency

In a significant move for the state’s local governance, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue has sworn in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen. The ceremony, held on Monday in Makurdi, marked a pivotal moment in the life and future of local government administration in Benue.

In his address, Governor Alia tasked the new chairmen with accountability and transparency, emphasizing the importance of responsible leadership. He stated that granting autonomy to the local government has its consequences and urged the chairmen to work diligently, provide leadership, and uphold the highest standards of governance in their respective councils.

The results of the local government elections, declared by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) on Sunday, showed the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates emerged victorious, winning all 23 chairmanship and 276 councillorship seats. Governor Alia described the APC as serious and cautioned the new council chiefs against disappointing the electorates who voted massively for their victories.

The governor urged the chairmen to focus on bringing democratic deliverables to the people and remain committed to their areas of assignments. He also reminded them that leadership is about service and sacrifice, rather than personal glory. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the state and federal governments for effective service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen, Dennis Guda, Chairman of Vandiekya Local Government, promised to deliver dividends of democracy to the people. He pledged to remain loyal to the APC, uphold its constitution, and work with the state government to achieve success.

The event marks a significant step towards empowering local governments in Benue, allowing them to take a more active role in governance and service delivery. As the new chairmen take office, they are expected to work together with the state government and other stakeholders to implement policies and programs that benefit the rural communities.

In this momentous occasion, the people of Benue look forward to seeing the new chairmen deliver on their promises and work towards building a brighter future for their state.
