The Labour Party in Kano State has rejected claims that Bashir Ishak‑Bashir, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), was its governorship candidate. On Monday, Ishak‑Bashir told the News Agency of Nigeria that he had begun high‑level talks with the APC leadership at the national level about supporting the party in the upcoming general elections. “I will soon get across to you our final position on the matter,” he said.
LP Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Raji dismissed Ishak‑Bashir’s assertions, stating that he was never the party’s governorship candidate. At a news conference in Kano, Raji noted that Ishak‑Bashir’s name does not appear on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal as the Labour Party’s standard‑bearer for Kano State. “He came to the party alone and left alone,” Raji said, adding that the party’s structure remains intact, with all its senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly candidates still slated to contest the elections.
Raji acknowledged internal issues that have caused disunity among party members, saying that “some wrong elements” attempted to divert attention and threatened to defect. He warned such individuals that the “Obedients” fully support the Obi‑Dati movement, “hundred per cent in Kano State.”
Separately, a party source indicated that Raji’s name has been submitted to INEC as the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Kano State.
