Nigerian Ruling Party Criticises Ex-Minister for Inciting Protests over High Cost of Living
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has hit out at Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, for what it calls inciteful comments urging Nigerian youths to protest the current high cost of living in the country. In a statement released on Friday, Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, lambasted Amaechi’s remarks as insensitive and unpatriotic, advising Nigerians to disregard them.
Amaechi, a former Speaker and two-term governor of Rivers, had recently criticized Nigerian youth for not protesting against the high cost of living in the country. However, the APC has strongly condemned his comments, describing them as a ploy to deceive and incite violence.
According to Morka, Nigerians are well-aware that the economic challenges currently facing the country are temporary and will soon give way to long-term benefits brought about by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration’s reforms. He expressed optimism that Nigerians would not be swayed by Amaechi’s Wake, but would instead wait calmly for the dividends of democracy to manifest.
The APC also took aim at Amaechi’s past record, accusing him of doing little to improve the living conditions of Nigerians during his time in office. “It is nauseating to think that these naysayer tribesmen, who did absolutely nothing to improve the economy or living conditions for Nigerians while they were in office, are now pontificating endlessly about what and how things should be done,” Morka said.
The party slammed Amaechi’s comments as a sign of hypocrisy, saying he and his cohorts only regain their sense of purpose when out of office. “A tribe of naysayers is what they are, who never see any good, only gloom, filled with bile and disdain for the determined strides of APC-administration of Tinubu to transform our country’s economy for the benefit of present and future generations of Nigerians,” Morka concluded.
