Nigeria’s Edo State Governor Prepares for Handover of Power

In just thirty days, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki will hand over power to the incoming administration, and he has already taken the first step towards a seamless transition. Obaseki has asked the governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to constitute a transition team, which will interface with Obaseki’s outgoing administration’s transition team.

According to a statement made available on Sunday, the Secretary to the State Government, Joseph Eboigbe, made the call for the constitution of the transition team. Eboigbe explained that establishing the team would allow both parties to begin meaningful discussions and share vital information, ensuring a smooth transfer of responsibilities and continuity of governance.

The letter, dated October 10, 2024, addressed to the governor-elect, outlines the objectives of the transition process. Eboigbe noted that the current administration will provide necessary support and resources to make the transition as effective and efficient as possible. The inaugural meeting of the transition committees is proposed for October 14, 2024.

It is worth noting that Eboigbe’s letter has not yet been responded to by the governor-elect. However, the outgoing administration is committed to working closely with the incoming administration to ensure a successful transition.

This move is a significant step towards maintaining continuity and stability in the governance of Edo State. By promoting cooperation and information-sharing, the transition process can ensure a smooth handing over of power, which is crucial for the development and progress of the state.

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has been in office since 2016 and will complete his two terms on November 12, 2024. He is handing over power to Senator Monday Okpebholo, who won the September 21, 2024, governorship election with 291,667 votes.
