Despair and Devastation: The Mental Health Crisis in Eastern Congo

The conflict in eastern Congo has led to a severe mental health crisis, with little support available for those affected. For Nelly Shukuru, life in the displacement camp had become unbearable, and she planned to end her life. "I took this scarf and arranged it like this so that I could use it to commit suicide. I wanted to put it there, but then I thought about my children," Nelly recalled. Thankfully, a neighbor’s timely intervention saved her life.

Years of conflict have led to a rise in mental health concerns, with aid groups reporting a significant increase in people seeking help. According to Action Against Hunger, the number of people receiving psychosocial support in camps around Goma surged by over 200% between January and June. The organization also noted a dramatic increase in suicidal thoughts, from about five a month to over 120.

The conditions in the displacement camps are far from ideal, with overcrowding, inadequate resources, and limited access to healthcare. For many, the trauma of displacement, violence, and loss of identity has led to a downward spiral of despair. "When they finished raping me, I wanted to commit suicide," said a woman who preferred to remain anonymous. "They advised me. Without their intervention, I would have died. They were the ones who consoled me."

Innocent Ntamuheza, a psychologist with Action Against Hunger, emphasized the widespread trauma caused by the ongoing conflict. "There is an increase in need every day," he said. "The numbers increase every day." As the conflict continues, the mental health needs of those displaced by the violence are growing. Despite aid organization efforts, the support available is insufficient to meet the escalating demand, leaving many to cope with trauma and despair in dire conditions.

The crisis in eastern Congo is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict on mental health. As the world marks the growing desperation, it is crucial that we prioritize the well-being of those affected, providing them with the support they so desperately need to overcome the trauma and rebuild their lives.
