Henry Nwosu Super Eagles 1980 AFCON Hero Dies at 62

Henry Nwosu, a former midfielder for Nigeria’s national football team and a key figure in the country’s first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph, has died at the age of 62. His passing was confirmed by former teammate Segun Odegbami via social media on Saturday.

According to Odegbami’s statement, Nwosu died at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, Lagos. He had been in intensive care since Wednesday following a five-day hospitalization. Nwosu was a recipient of the national honor Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).

Nwosu is best remembered for his role in Nigeria’s victorious 1980 AFCON campaign, hosted by Nigeria in Lagos. As the youngest member of that squad, then known as the ‘Green Eagles,’ he contributed to the team’s historic achievement—securing Nigeria’s first continental title on home soil. His midfield prowess was integral to the team’s success, which laid the foundation for Nigeria’s subsequent emergence as a dominant force in African football.

The 1980 championship remains a landmark moment in Nigerian sports history. Winning the tournament on home soil galvanized national pride and signaled the arrival of the ‘Green Eagles’ as a competitive team, later rebranded as the ‘Super Eagles.’ Nwosu’s presence as the squad’s youngest player underscored a generational shift, with his performance helping to define an era.

Beyond the continental win, Nwosu represented a generation of players who elevated Nigerian football internationally. His career, though less documented in later years, is cemented by his contribution to that 1980 team, a group still celebrated for its skill and unity.

His death prompts reflections on the legacy of Nigeria’s early football heroes, many of whom have passed in recent years. The football community and fans are expected to mourn the loss of a player who helped secure the nation’s inaugural AFCON title. Details regarding funeral arrangements are pending family announcement.

Nwosu’s passing marks the end of a life directly linked to a foundational achievement in Nigerian football history. His role in the 1980 AFCON victory ensures his place in the narrative of the sport’s development in the country.
