Jadeveon Clowney has officially returned to the Houston Texans, declaring that the pursuit of a championship with his original team outweighed more lucrative offers from elsewhere. The defensive end signed his contract this week, confirming that his decision to rejoin the franchise that selected him with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft was driven by unfinished business rather than financial gain.
“It wasn’t about money because I could have went other places for a little bit more money than this,” Clowney said following the signing. “But I’m like, it’s Year 13, I started here, go back here, try to win, and see how the rest of my career goes. Trying to chase that Super Bowl with the Texans.”
At 33 years old, Clowney acknowledges he is a vastly different person than the 21-year-old rookie who arrived in Houston over a decade ago. He spoke candidly about his upbringing, noting that his father was incarcerated when he was born and that he was raised in a single-parent household. That background, he said, shaped his early perspective, but time and experience have brought maturity he now hopes to share with younger teammates.
“I was a big kid when I first got here,” Clowney said. “I grew up different than a lot of these guys. Coming back now, I’m a veteran, a lot older, a lot smarter than I was before.”
The veteran pass rusher said he was moved by the reception he received from fans during his first training camp practice on Tuesday. The loud cheers that greeted him as he took the field served as a reminder of the connection he maintains with the city.
“It’s a great feeling after all these years to come back and they still got love for you and happy that you’re back here,” Clowney said. “It’s a blessing.”

Having played for five different franchises since leaving Houston in 2020, his familiarity with the organization and the city provides a rare continuity.
