Google Meet Introduces Pronoun Feature for Enterprise and Edu Users

In an effort to create a more inclusive environment, Google has rolled out a new feature that allows enterprise users and Google Edu users to share their pronouns on Google Meet. This feature is designed to help users avoid awkward and potentially embarrassing situations where they have to guess or assume someone’s pronouns. The feature is now available for enterprise users and users of Google Edu, a service designed for educational purposes, as long as the system administrator has turned on the pronouns feature.

With pronouns turned on, they will be visible next to the user’s picture in Google Meet, as well as in other Google products such as Chat, Calendar, and Docs. To access this feature, users can go to the "About Me" section of their Google Account, which can be found by navigating to the personal info tab or through a Google permalink. Once in the "About Me" section, users can select the "basic info" box and click on "pronouns" to change their settings.

Google offers a range of pronoun options for users to choose from, including "she / her," "he / him," "they / them," and "no pronouns set." Users can also add custom pronouns if needed. It’s worth noting that some countries have laws related to gender expression, and Google reminds users to keep this in mind when selecting their pronouns.

In addition to choosing their pronouns, users can also select who can see their pronouns. Visibility can be limited to the user themselves, their organization, or anyone. If users want their pronouns to be visible to fellow Meet participants, they can select either their organization or anyone.

However, users may encounter some limitations when it comes to viewing pronouns on Google Meet. Pronoun updates that are visible to others can only be viewed in web-based Meetings or Meet calls. If a mobile device user sets their pronouns and then joins a Meet call, their pronouns can be viewed by participants on the web, but not by the user on mobile.

This new feature is a step towards creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment on Google Meet. By allowing users to share their pronouns, Google is promoting a culture of respect and understanding.
