NSCDC Patrols Anambra Amid IPOB Sit-at-Home Order

Anambra State Under Lockdown as Nigeria’s Civil Defence Corps Patrol Streets

In response to a two-day sit-at-home directive issued by a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been patrolling the streets and major roads in Anambra State. The IPOB faction had circulated videos and voice notes last week, directing residents of the South-East to stay indoors on October 21 and 22, and threatening severe consequences for non-compliance.

According to Okadigbo Edwin, Head of Media and Tactical Operations for the NSCDC Anambra State Command, the patrols are part of efforts to address the alleged threats and reassure residents of their safety. "The state commandant has ordered ‘show of force operations’ and ‘confidence-building patrols’ across the state to address the alleged threat," Edwin explained.

The deployment of NSCDC personnel, in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, aims to protect lives and property, particularly around critical national, state, and local government assets and infrastructure. Edwin noted that this proactive measure is designed to reassure residents of Anambra of the command’s readiness to prevent disruptions, maintain law and order, and deter potential breaches of peace.

Edwin urged residents to go about their daily activities without fear or intimidation, emphasizing that the NSCDC, alongside other security agencies, is fully prepared to maintain peace and security throughout the state. The command also urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, to be mindful of their surroundings, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security formation or via the emergency hotline.

Despite the reassurances, markets, schools, motor parks, banks, petrol stations, law courts, and other public facilities remained closed, while major roads across the state were largely deserted. The NSCDC’s efforts to maintain peace and security in Anambra State are a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.

As the situation unfolds, the international community will be watching closely to see how the Nigerian government responds to the IPOB’s directive and the subsequent lockdown in Anambra State. One thing is clear: the NSCDC’s proactive measures are a crucial step in maintaining law and order in the face of uncertainty and potential unrest.
