The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, inaugurated the Presidential Transition Council, tasking it with ensuring a seamless handover of power from the current administration to the incoming one. This follows President Major Muhammadu Buhari (retd)’s signing of Executive Order No. 14 of 2023 on the Facilitation and Management of Presidential Transitions on February 7.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja on Tuesday, the SGF urged council members to intensify their efforts so that the next administration receives all necessary support for an early and swift start. He described the event as “another historic moment for our administration, demonstrating our commitment to strengthening key governance institutions that support our democratic process.” He added, “It is with great delight and honour that I am carrying out the onerous task of inaugurating the Presidential Transition Council, on behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The council’s responsibilities include facilitating the handover from the current President to the President‑elect, organizing security for the President‑elect and Vice President‑elect, and coordinating security briefings on post‑election national security matters. It will also arrange necessary facilities, such as fully furnished offices and personnel, for the President‑elect and the transition team.

Additional duties involve facilitating communication between the outgoing President and the President‑elect, preparing the program and organizing the swearing‑in ceremony, and carrying out any other activities required to ensure optimal performance of the President’s functions under the Constitution. The council will perform any other functions assigned to it under the 1999 Constitution as amended.
