The Nigerian Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing rural electrification, unveiling a new 100kWp solar hybrid mini-grid in Uhuafor Nomeh, a community in Enugu State. This project, overseen by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), marks a significant step towards expanding clean, sustainable energy access in Nigeria’s rural areas.
At the inauguration ceremony, the REA’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, represented by Executive Director Doris Uboh, highlighted that the mini-grid, funded by the Rural Electrification Fund, exemplifies the government’s effort to extend reliable power to underserved communities. Designed to benefit not only Uhuafor Nomeh but also the nearby communities of Imeama, Amakabi, and Uhuorji, the mini-grid is expected to improve the quality of life for thousands of residents.
“This solar power project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, demonstrating the REA’s commitment to collaborating with state governments to bridge Nigeria’s rural energy gap,” Aliyu said. “With over 50 solar mini-grids deployed nationwide, the REA has delivered sustainable energy solutions to hundreds of communities across Nigeria, contributing significantly to social and economic growth.”
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, represented by Special Adviser Joe Anieke, noted the transformative impact the project is expected to bring, stating that it embodies “hope, progress, and empowerment” for rural Enugu communities. He also acknowledged the REA’s dedication to connecting underserved areas and fostering innovation across the state.
The project, constructed by Ochuvus Nigeria Limited, includes 256 solar panels, six inverters, and 26 battery banks, all equipped with internet-enabled monitoring for real-time energy tracking. Ginika Eronini of Ochuvus Nigeria Limited said that the system is designed to run at an average daily efficiency of 72%, serving up to 10,000 people with clean energy.
Traditional Ruler Lt. Col. Israel Mbah (ret.), represented by spokesperson Uchenna Anyanwu, expressed the community’s gratitude and pledged to protect the facility. He emphasized the project’s importance for daily activities and educational improvements, adding that it would reduce the need for environmentally harmful alternatives like kerosene lamps.
As Nigeria continues to address climate change challenges, the federal government remains committed to supporting rural communities with sustainable energy solutions, aiming to empower and improve living standards across the country.
