Bayelsa Monarch Urges Niger Delta Commission to Accelerate Development Efforts

NDDC-Board

A traditional leader in Bayelsa State, David Amakiri, has voiced the growing impatience of Niger Delta residents for enhanced regional development from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The appeal was made during a visit by NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, and other officials to the monarch’s palace in Oruma, Ogbia Local Government Area, where Amakiri expressed gratitude for the NDDC’s contributions while urging for more.

The visit was aimed at recognizing Amakiri’s new role as Obanobhan of the Emeyal Clan, with Dr. Ogbuku acknowledging the essential role traditional leaders play in maintaining peace in the region. The Bayelsa State representative on the NDDC Board, Senator Denyanbofa Dimaro, and other Commission directors accompanied Ogbuku on the visit.

Amakiri commended the NDDC for infrastructure projects in the area, including the construction of the Oruma rigid pavement road and other local roads. He highlighted the transformative impact these developments have had, noting they resolved long-standing infrastructure challenges in the community. “Our people are anxious to see more development projects,” Amakiri stated. “We have ensured peace in the Niger Delta, so there should be no excuse for not developing our region.”

Ogbuku assured the monarch of continued efforts, mentioning a new initiative to channel the Kolo Creek, which connects multiple communities across Rivers and Bayelsa states. This channelization project aims to mitigate flooding and prevent health risks associated with waterborne diseases.

The courtesy visit underscores the NDDC’s commitment to fostering development in collaboration with local leaders, who play a key role in supporting the Commission’s mission across the Niger Delta.
