The spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, Daniel Bwala, has called on the Federal Government to remove Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike before the 2023 general elections begin. Speaking on Arise TV on Wednesday, Bwala said that the only solution to the ongoing crisis within the PDP in Rivers is the governor’s removal and that the Federal Government should declare a state of emergency in the state. He warned that Wike’s actions could jeopardise a free and fair election, stating, “If the chief executive officer of the state cannot allow a free and fair conduct, then the proper thing to do is to declare a state of emergency, remove him and conduct the election there, and this wouldn’t be new in Nigeria.”
Bwala also expressed confidence that the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would win the presidential election even in Rivers State. He noted that the party cancelled its presidential rally in the state to “avoid bloodshed,” but added that Atiku would celebrate his victory with the people of Rivers if he wins. According to Bwala, the state has leaders who will ensure Atiku’s success, citing former National Chairman Uche Secondus and other “ground soldiers” who have consistently delivered votes for Atiku in past elections.
Governor Wike, together with four other PDP governors—Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Samuel Ortom of Benue, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo—have repeatedly demanded the resignation of PDP National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu as a condition for supporting Atiku in the upcoming polls. They argue that the national chairman and the presidential candidate should not come from the same region, which in this case is the North.
