President Muhammadu Buhari, Major General (retd.), will depart Nigeria on Thursday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to take part in the 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, the presidency announced. His media aide, Garba Shehu, posted on Twitter after the president’s national address, outlining Buhari’s agenda at the summit.
Buhari is slated to attend three high‑level meetings covering peace and security, climate change, and the political situation in several West African nations. The AU Summit’s theme is “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area Implementation.” The first meeting is the Peace and Security Council of Heads of State and Government, focusing on the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo; it will be chaired by South Africa’s president, who serves as the Council’s chair for February. The second is the Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, currently chaired by the president of Niger.
In addition, Buhari will participate in an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held on the margins of the AU’s annual meetings. He will deliver remarks at these events and present Nigeria’s National Statement during the opening session of the summit, which brings together leaders from AU member states, several non‑AU countries, and international institutions accredited to the AU in Addis Ababa.
Buhari is expected to return to Nigeria on Monday, 20 February, accompanied by several ministers and other senior government officials.
