Protesters have taken to the streets of Ibadan in Oyo State over the scarcity of the new naira and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ban on the old N500 and N1,000 notes. The unrest began on Iwo Road, where gunshots were heard, and has since spread to other parts of the city. A video shared on Twitter by @Ibadantwitta_ shows people fleeing for safety at the sound of gunfire, with traffic halted in several areas.

The protests follow a broader nationwide movement that started early Friday morning after President Major General Muhammadu Buhari announced on Thursday that only the old N200 note would remain legal tender until April 10. Demonstrations have already erupted in Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers states. Stay safe.
