World’s biggest religious festival begins in India [PHOTOS]

Millions of devotees have gathered in the northern Indian city of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, as the Mahakumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious festival, officially begins.

The six-week-long festival draws Hindus from across India and the globe to Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

Believers take a holy dip in the waters, which they believe purifies them of sins and grants spiritual blessings.

The festival grounds, spread across 4,000 hectares of open land along the rivers’ banks, have been transformed into a vibrant tent city to accommodate the millions of pilgrims.MixCollage 13 Jan 2025 08 08 PM 6280

Visitors arrive in colourful processions, singing and dancing as they make their way to the sacred waters.

Devotees also perform fire rituals and other spiritual practices, adding to the festival’s awe-inspiring atmosphere.

The Mahakumbh Mela attracts participants from all walks of life, from ascetics and sadhus (holy men) to families and international tourists eager to witness this extraordinary display of faith.MixCollage 13 Jan 2025 08 06 PM 827

Authorities expect the numbers to swell further in the coming weeks, as millions more are anticipated to join the festivities.

Local authorities have implemented extensive security measures, set up healthcare facilities, and organised transport systems to ensure the safety and comfort of attendees.
