Kola Ologbondiyan, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declared on Tuesday that the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, is occupying his position illegally. Ologbondiyan’s statement comes in light of external forces attempting to undermine the PDP.
During an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, the former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP expressed concerns that there are efforts to transform the party into an extension of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that there are significant tensions within the party regarding leadership positions.
Ologbondiyan highlighted that Damagum hails from the Northeast, while the Northcentral region is advocating for the return of the National Chairman position to their area. He stated, “Like a proverb says, if there is no spilt on the wall, the lizard can’t come in. There will definitely be issues in the party, but how these issues are managed is one aspect, and how external influences disrupt the party is another.”
He further elaborated on the internal conflict, noting, “There are issues in the party. The Northcentral believes that the position of National Chairman should return to them, while Damagum, from the Northeast, currently holds that position.” Ologbondiyan concluded by asserting that regardless of how long Damagum remains in his role, he is doing so illegitimately, which is a significant issue for the party.
