Premier League releases statement on why David Brooks escaped red against Chelsea

The Premier League released a statement on Tuesday night, clarifying that David Brooks avoided a red card for dragging Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella to the ground because the incident was not classified as violent conduct. Referee Rob Jones reviewed the situation at the pitchside monitor after being alerted to a potential violent conduct offense. During this review, it appeared that Brooks had used his arm to bring Cucurella down as Chelsea initiated a counter-attack.

Initially, it seemed that Brooks might receive a red card; however, after multiple views of the incident, Jones opted to issue a yellow card instead. This decision frustrated both Chelsea players and supporters at Stamford Bridge. The statement explained, “VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card to Brooks for violent conduct. Upon review, the referee deemed that the challenge on Cucurella was a reckless action and not violent conduct – and issued a yellow card to Brooks.”

In the match, Cole Palmer had given Chelsea the lead before Bournemouth responded with two goals from Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo. However, Reece James scored a late free-kick, allowing the Blues to secure a point at home as their title hopes began to diminish.
