The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has expressed concerns regarding the administration of President Tinubu, indicating that the government is making significant mistakes. He stated that he does not wish to assist in correcting the policies that are adversely affecting the citizens.
Sanusi made these remarks on Wednesday in Lagos while serving as the chairman for the 21st Anniversary of Fawehinmiism, specifically during the Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture 2025. He noted that although he could provide insights into the administration’s trajectory and the predictability of its decisions, he opted not to do so due to the government’s lack of amicable behavior towards him.
He explained that while the solutions he could offer might benefit the government, he is unwilling to assist them because of how he has been treated. “I can give a few points that are contrary, that explain perhaps what we’re going through and how it was totally predictable, most of it, and maybe avoidable. But I am not going to do that,” he stated.
Sanusi further elaborated, “I have chosen not to speak about the economy or the reforms or to even explain anything because if I explain, it would help this government, but I don’t want to help this government.” He emphasized that although he considers them friends, their actions do not reflect that friendship, leading him to refrain from offering assistance. He criticized the administration for lacking credible representatives who can adequately explain their policies, stating, “Let them come and explain to Nigerians why the policies that are being pursued are being pursued.”
He also remarked on the warnings issued decades ago regarding the current path the government is on, asserting, “People were told decades ago that if you continue along this path, this is where you’re going to end up, and they refused to open their eyes. Now, is everything being done today correct? No,” the Emir concluded.
Media Talk Africa notes that Emir Sanusi, who was deposed as the 14th Emir of Kano in 2020 by then-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the current national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano in 2024 by the New Nigeria Peoples Party-led Kano State Government. His reign has faced ongoing challenges from forces believed to be supported by the federal government, including the continued recognition of his predecessor, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, by federal officials.
Additionally, Media Talk Africa recalls that last month, the police barricaded his palace, with the state government accusing the federal government of orchestrating the action to incite unrest in the otherwise peaceful state.
