Nasarawa State seals lithium mining company over alleged regulatory violations

The Nasarawa State Government has sealed the operations of Timadix Geomin Consult Nigeria Limited, a lithium mining company in the Kokona Local Government Area, due to alleged violations of mining regulations. This move has led to a dispute between the state government and the firm.

Timadix Geomin Consult is accused of operating without following the state’s established mining guidelines. In response, the company’s Managing Director, Tim Eldon, held a press conference where he claimed that Timadix had obtained all necessary licenses and adhered to proper procedures before commencing operations.

He called on the Federal Government, particularly the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, to intervene and ensure a fair resolution.

However, during a press briefing in Lafia, the state capital, Acting Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe rejected the company’s claims.

He maintained that Timadix did not follow the required procedures and was not a legitimate operator in the state. Akabe emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting communities rich in mineral resources from unauthorized operators who often engage in illegal mining practices.

“Our decision to shut down Timadix Geomin Consult aligns with our efforts to eradicate illegal mining in Nasarawa State,” Akabe stated. He also revealed that a committee tasked with investigating the company’s activities found significant irregularities, including issues with the company’s consent letters. The investigation, conducted by a sub-committee comprising local stakeholders, including traditional rulers and the council chairman, uncovered that the consent letters were improperly obtained and contained forged signatures from royal fathers.

While reaffirming the state’s welcoming stance towards investors, Akabe emphasized the importance of compliance with legal requirements. “We are open to investors, but they must respect our laws. Companies like Timadix and others wishing to engage in mining or any other ventures must follow due process to avoid situations like this,” he cautioned.

The acting governor assured residents that the state government would strengthen monitoring of mining activities and shut down any illegal operations.
