A former Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the First Lady, Zainab Kassim, has filed a lawsuit seeking enforcement of her fundamental rights against Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and demanding N100 million in damages. The other respondents named in the case are the Inspector‑General of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Kassim alleges that officers of the DSS, acting on orders from Aisha Buhari, abducted her and took her to the Presidential Villa, where she was severely assaulted, dehumanised, and abused. She claims the First Lady, with the support of DSS and police officers, targeted her for deleting posts on social media.
The suit, filed under the number FHC/ABJ/OS/202/2023, asks the court to declare her arrest and detention unlawful. The case has not yet been assigned to a judge. Attempts to contact the First Lady’s spokesperson, Mr. Aliyu Abdullahi, were unsuccessful, and he had not responded to a message sent regarding the matter at the time of this report.
