The Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) called on Friday for an investigation into Kaduna State Governor Nasir el‑Rufai after he opposed the federal directive to withdraw the old N1,000 and N500 naira notes. President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) had announced that, effective 17 February, the old N500 and N1,000 notes would no longer be legal tender, while the N200 note would remain in circulation until 10 April 2023. He urged Nigerians to deposit the withdrawn notes with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
In contrast, Governor el‑Rufai used a statewide broadcast on Thursday night to instruct residents to continue using the old notes until the issue is resolved by the Supreme Court. SOKAPU’s spokesperson, Luka Binniyat, said the union has been closely monitoring the “curious ongoing drama” between the governor and the federal government over the new naira policy, noting its impact on the welfare of its members. Binniyat added that Governor el‑Rufai appears to be leading a group of APC governors seeking to reverse the controversial naira redesign, a move that has secured a temporary injunction from the Supreme Court. However, President Buhari and CBN Governor Godwin Emiefele have so far refused to fully comply with the court’s order.
