The Rivers State Police Command has restored peace in the Mile 3 and Mile 2 Diobu axis of Ikwerre road in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of the state, following unrest in the area over naira scarcity.
It was alleged that hoodlums, under the guise of protesting for naira scarcity, stormed the road, burning tyres, chasing and robbing people in the area.
DAILYPOST reports that commercial bus drivers abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.
The chaos is said to have spread from Ikoku to Emenike and Okija area in Diobu axis of Port Harcourt.
It took the intervention of tactical teams of the state Police Command to restore peace to the area, following a response to distress calls.
Policemen of the state command have invaded the area with patrol vans.
The naira scarcity has sparked protests in different states in the country. In some states, facilities of commercial banks have been destroyed, burned or vandalized.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday, asked the Central Bank of Nigeria to make available the old two hundred naira note, extending its usage till April 10, 2023.
The decision by the president has, however, been criticized by some governors of the All Progressives Congress, including Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive limiting the legal tender status of old notes to only N200, describing it as a total disregard of the Supreme Court on the matter.
