Jigawa Governor’s wife demands end to female circumcision

The wife of the Jigawa State Governor, Hajiya Hadiza Umar Namadi, has called for an end to the practice of female circumcision, emphasizing its harmful effects on women and girls.

Hajiya Hadiza stated this at a ceremony to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in Dutse, the state capital.

She said the United Nations fixed February 6 of every year to create awareness as part of the UN’s efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation.

She highlighted the dangers associated with female circumcision, stressing that it brings more harm than good.

According to her, “the people of Jigawa have already abandoned the harmful practice, we are urging others to follow suit.”

The governor’s wife used the occasion to advocate for the protection of women’s rights.

Mrs Namadi also urged religious and community leaders to adhere to Islamic teachings that prioritize the well-being of women and discourage harmful practices.

She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting women’s and children’s rights.
