Ondo: Suspected kidnappers kill health worker near airport

A 46-year-old health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, has been shot dead by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers in Ondo State.

The deceased was killed a few metres from Akure Airport in Eleyowo, Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

Oyabiyi was ambushed by his attackers while driving home at about 8 pm two days ago.

According to sources, Oyabiyi, a father of four, drove into the gunmen, who immediately opened fire on him. He succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

A few days ago, gunmen suspected to be herders shot dead five farmers in Ajegunle-Powerline, in the Akure North Local Council Area, with the perpetrators yet to be apprehended.

Over 13 people have also been abducted within the council in the last two weeks, with tension gradually building in the state, particularly within Akure metropolis.

Meanwhile, a family source, who requested anonymity, stated: “He (Oyabiyi) was shot by gunmen while driving home. He ran into them very close to the airport. The bullets hit him in the stomach.

“He was rushed to the hospital, but he died and was later taken to the mortuary.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident, stressing that the command’s tactical teams are on the trail of the assailants.

“We urge family members of victims to please endeavour to report such incidents as they happen, ” she said.
