Naira crisis portends danger to elections – Ekiti monarchs

The Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Ayodele Adejuwon, has called on the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to accelerate measures that will ensure a stable flow of currency and alleviate the economic hardships citizens are enduring. As the Onisan of Isan Ekiti, Oba Adejuwon warned that the violence linked to naira scarcity carries serious implications, noting, “We are saddened by reports of protests, the burning of institutions and the shooting of angry Nigerians over naira scarcity. These are dangerous events that threaten the free conduct of the 2023 polls.”

In a statement issued on Saturday titled “Naira Scarcity: Ekiti Obas sue for peace, task INEC, security agencies on free, fair polls,” the traditional ruler appealed to all Nigerians, especially those in Ekiti State, to maintain peace and obey the law, assuring that the current problem will be addressed in due course. He urged the Federal Government to act promptly to prevent further deterioration of the economy by making currency readily available, emphasizing that any further delay could be dangerous.

Oba Adejuwon also cautioned Ekiti residents, who are bearing the heavy burden of naira note scarcity, to remain prudent. He acknowledged that the situation is far from ideal but stressed the need to proceed carefully to avoid worsening the crisis. While the pain caused by the shortage is becoming unbearable, he warned that arson, killings and violent protests will not solve the problem.

The monarchs further warned politicians and the public against bloodshed during the upcoming general election, urging them to allow voters to exercise their franchise freely under the principle of one‑person‑one‑vote. They appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to remain apolitical in conducting the polls. According to the traditional rulers, fairness and neutrality from these bodies will help stabilize the country and ensure a smooth transition of power at all levels.
