PDP defends acting chairman, Damagum amid increased party squabbles

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Dingyadi, has responded to allegations from some party members claiming bias in the appointment of the National Secretary.

The accusations target Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, for allegedly supporting a specific individual for the position.

Dingyadi defended Damagum against accusations that he had undermined the National Working Committee’s (NWC) decisions regarding the National Secretary’s issue.

“It is unfair to accuse Ambassador Damagum, who has worked tirelessly to elevate the party and unite its leadership, of sabotaging the NWC’s efforts,” Dingyadi stated.

“His leadership has been instrumental in maintaining party unity and cohesion, especially after the 2023 general elections.”

Dingyadi clarified that Damagum was not even in Abuja on the day of the dispute, as he had traveled to Damaturu to attend his cousin’s daughter’s wedding preparations.

He also noted that the accusations against Damagum were driven by factions within the party, particularly from the northern region, backed by individuals aiming to install a compliant leadership to further their own agendas.

Despite these challenges, Damagum has continued to promote the party’s growth and unity, Dingyadi affirmed.

“The rumors about his alleged connections with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, are baseless. Ambassador Damagum remains fully committed to the party’s progress.”

As Acting National Chairman, Damagum has shown unwavering dedication to the PDP, organizing meetings, managing disciplinary issues through reconciliation, and prioritizing the party’s unity over personal interests.

Dingyadi concluded by reminding critics that Damagum remains a bona fide member of the National Working Committee and other constitutionally recognized organs.

“Those making these accusations are ultimately harming the party, undermining the very institutions that ensure its survival. Damagum’s leadership is grounded in constitutional provisions,” he said.
