The Chief of Staff to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Abdulkareem Asuku, has announced his intention to contest the November 2023 governorship election and succeed his principal. Speaking shortly after purchasing the ₦50 million nomination and expression‑of‑interest forms at the All Progressives Congress national secretariat in Abuja, the 39‑year‑old said he is strong‑willed, healthy, and capable of building on Bello’s achievements in the state.

“I present myself to serve and consolidate the numerous achievements of His Excellency, Yahaya Bello,” Asuku declared. “Youths are today in charge in Nigeria, and that is why someone like me can pick a form to contest for governorship at the age of 39.” He pledged to strengthen security, infrastructural development, women’s inclusion and the overall inclusive direction of the administration, noting that Bello’s government has already achieved more than forty percent women’s inclusion, which he intends to consolidate.

“Today we are not talking about politics of ethnicity or religious affiliation; we are looking for who can bring development,” he added. Asuku highlighted his experience as chief of staff, describing the role as “the engine room of the administration.”

The ruling party has scheduled the primary election for Monday, 10 April, with the congress to ratify the results of the Imo and Bayelsa governorship primaries set for 11 April. An appeal on the primary election is slated for Wednesday, 12 April.
