MACBAN calls for probe into killing of Kwara chapter chairman

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has urged security agencies to investigate the killing of its Kwara State Chairman, Idrissu Abubakar, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

Abubakar was reportedly attacked at about 10 p.m. on Saturday in front of his residence at Oke Ose, Ilorin East Local Government Area shortly after returning from Tarawee prayers. The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, SP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, on Sunday.

Ejire-Adeyemi stated that police detectives recovered five expended 7.62mm shells from the crime scene and have launched an investigation into the killing.

Reacting to the incident, MACBAN’s National President, Alhaji Baba Ngelzarma, described Abubakar as a dedicated leader committed to transforming livestock production in Nigeria. In a statement issued by the association’s National Secretary, Malam Bello Gotomo in Abuja, Ngelzarma expressed deep concern over the rising cases of violence targeting MACBAN officials.

“We call on the security agencies to thoroughly investigate this incessant killing of our leaders by criminals. In the last two years, MACBAN has lost over seven state and local government chairmen to unknown gunmen,” Ngelzarma said.

He also noted that the association’s National Vice President, Alhaji Manir Lamido, has been missing since 2023 after disappearing while traveling between Katsina and Kaduna states.

Ngelzarma extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the Kwara State Government, and MACBAN members nationwide. He assured that the association would work towards identifying those responsible for what he termed a “dastardly act of cowardice.”

The police have urged the public to provide any useful information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators.
