Peter Obi and Datti Baba‑Ahmed
Moses Jolayemi, the coordinator of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council in Ekiti State, said on Saturday that the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will ensure a free, fair and credible general election—provided it is allowed to operate properly. Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, 25 February 2023. The three major candidates are Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
Jolayemi expressed confidence that his principal, Obi, will emerge victorious, but he emphasized that BVAS—an electronic device that reads Permanent Voter Cards and authenticates voters—must not be compromised. Speaking at a town‑hall meeting with journalists at the Damlek Event Centre in Ado Ekiti, he explained, “If BVAS is allowed to work, we will have credible, violence‑free elections. From voting to collation and the announcement of results, there is no human intervention. With this, Peter Obi is the next president.”
Addressing the turmoil caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira redesign policy, Jolayemi affirmed the Labour Party’s support for the retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari‑led federal government’s initiative. He noted that the implementation challenges were temporary and would eventually subside.
Balogun Akin Osuntokun, Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, urged the 16 local‑government party agents present at the meeting to intensify mobilisation for Obi. He promised that the Labour Party candidate would confront the nation’s pressing problems, including insecurity, hunger, high fuel prices, rising costs of consumables, strikes, and unemployment.
Mrs. Wendy Obi, the women’s leader of the Labour Party in Ekiti State, called on Ekiti residents to secure the party’s victory by voting in large numbers. She argued that the APC and PDP have burdened the country with enormous debt for future generations, and asserted that the Labour Party will rebuild Nigeria.
