The National Association of Idoma Students, NAIS, has opposed the recent tuition fee increase announced by the management of Benue State University, BSU, Makurdi.

The union described it as an unbearable financial burden on students amid the country’s economic hardships.

In a statement, NAIS President, Comrade Okoh Emmanuel Oche, condemned the hike, describing it as both unfair and ill-timed. He warned that the additional financial strain would force many students to abandon their education, ultimately affecting the state’s educational landscape.

“The timing of this tuition fee increase is highly insensitive, given the current economic downturn affecting households across the country. Many students may be left with no choice but to drop out, jeopardising their future,” Oche stated.

NAIS has vowed to resist the implementation of the hike and is urging the university management to reconsider its decision. The association emphasised the need for dialogue and a more student-friendly approach to addressing financial challenges.

The Idoma student community has also expressed solidarity with the Students’ Union (SU) of Benue State University, firmly rejecting the proposed fee increase.

NAIS also called on the Benue State Government and other student union bodies to support the SU’s efforts in ensuring the reversal of the decision.
