A civic group, the Civil Society Committee for Anti‑fraud Election Security (CISCAES), called on the people of the South‑East to turn out in large numbers for the upcoming elections and vote for candidates of their choice. In a press conference titled “Worrisome State of Insecurity in Ebonyi State and its Dangerous Consequences Before, During and After the 2023 General Elections,” the group denounced the growing insecurity in Ebonyi State and accused Governor David Umahi of using the disbanded Ebubeagu security outfit to intimidate citizens and political opponents.
Kennedy Iyere, the national coordinator of CISCAES, described Umahi as a leader who “brooks no opposition” and alleged that the governor was intent on imposing his preferred candidate on Ebonyians through the outlawed Ebubeagu. Iyere noted that, despite a high court order disbanding the Ebubeagu outfit, Umahi quickly reconstituted the group with members from various states to continue intimidating the populace. He labeled Ebonyi State the most insecure in the entire South‑East and appealed to President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), the United States, and other Western nations to pressure Umahi to cease attacks on opposition parties.
Iyere further urged the federal government to scrutinize the activities of Ebubeagu in Ebonyi State to ensure peaceful, trouble‑free polls. Attempts to obtain a reaction from the state Commissioner for Information, Uchenna Orji, were unsuccessful; multiple calls and a text message to his phone went unanswered.
