A fire explosion has rocked a popular cooking‑gas plant located along the Effurun/Sapele road in the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. The gas station, identified as NELMIC Gas Plant and situated opposite the Effurun Post Office, was engulfed in flames at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday night. The cause of the explosion could not be immediately ascertained.

Witnesses told our correspondent that a thunderous sound preceded the blast, which completely destroyed the plant. The raging fire spread rapidly to neighboring residential buildings and a nearby church before fire‑service operatives were able to intervene.

The number of casualties remains unknown. An unspecified number of people are feared dead, while several others sustained injuries from the explosion. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report.
