Former NNPC Boss Mele Kyari Breaks Silence Amid EFCC Investigation Rumors
In a surprising turn of events, Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), has spoken out against rumors that he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Kyari’s statement comes on the heels of his dismissal from the NNPC Ltd board by President Bola Tinubu last month, along with other top officials.
Kyari took to social media to address the allegations, stating that he is currently taking a well-deserved rest after dedicating 34 years of service to the NNPC and NNPC Ltd, with 17 of those years in management roles. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve under two administrations, those of Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu. "I served not only my country but also God," Kyari said, emphasizing his commitment to accountability and his willingness to account for his stewardship during his tenure at the NNPC.
The former GCEO described the rumors of his EFCC custody as "clear mischief" and a "calculated attempt" to achieve a desired outcome. He urged the media to be cautious and avoid spreading unverified stories, which he believes can send the wrong signals to investors and the international community. Kyari also thanked his family and friends for their support and assured them that he is available to respond to all lawful queries.
The EFCC has indeed initiated an investigation into alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of funds by former top officials of the NNPC Ltd, including Kyari and another former chief executive, Abubakar Yar’Adua. A letter from the EFCC to the NNPC Managing Director requests certified records of salaries and allowances paid to 14 officials, including those who have retired.
As the investigation unfolds, Kyari’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in public service. His commitment to accounting for his stewardship, both to human institutions and to God, sets a positive tone for the future of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. With the new leadership of the NNPC Ltd, led by Bayo Ojulari as the new GCEO and Ahmadu Kida as non-executive chairman, the country looks forward to a new era of transparency and accountability in the management of its natural resources.
