In a notable statement, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Ganduje, has expressed that operating a one-party system in Nigeria would not be problematic if it aligns with the wishes of the Nigerian people. This statement comes after he led three senators from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, ahead of their planned defection to the APC.
Mr. Ganduje emphasized that the presence of too many political parties can hinder effective governance, similar to how too many cooks can spoil the broth. He insisted that the APC is not forcibly pursuing a one-party system but is open to welcoming members from other parties who are willing to join. “If a one-party state is a wish and blessing to Nigeria, then so be it,” he said, pointing out that China, one of the world’s most powerful nations, operates under a one-party system.
The defection of the Kebbi lawmakers is seen as a testament to the acceptance of President Tinubu’s administration policies. Mr. Ganduje noted that this move is part of the APC’s initiative to increase its numerical strength and enhance the quality and capacity of its followership. He assured that President Tinubu has given his blessing for the defection, describing it as a good development that reflects the current political trend in Nigeria, where members of other parties are increasingly joining the APC.
The APC chairman also addressed concerns about managing the influx of new members, stating that the party’s constitution is clear on the matter and that the APC has the necessary political experience to ensure a smooth integration process. “In managing the new influx, our constitution is very clear about this. And not only that — our political dexterity in managing such affairs is on the table. So, I assure you there will be smooth integration,” he said.
This development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as the APC continues to grow in strength and numbers. The party’s openness to accommodating defectors from other parties highlights its commitment to democratic principles and its willingness to work towards a more unified political front. As the political scene in Nigeria continues to evolve, the APC’s stance on a potential one-party system and its ability to manage new memberships will be closely watched by both domestic and international observers.
