Romanian Presidential Candidate Accuses France of Interfering in Election

Romania’s presidential election has taken a dramatic turn as Eurosceptic candidate George Simion accuses France of attempting to undermine the country’s democratic process. With the runoff vote just around the corner, Simion, who won the first round with over 40% of the vote, alleges that Paris is secretly working to influence Romania’s top court, media, and businesses. This claim comes after the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the initial vote in November, citing irregularities and alleged Russian interference, which Moscow has vehemently denied.

Simion, the leader of the right-wing Alliance for the Union of Romanians, has been a vocal critic of the EU and has faced his own set of challenges, including being banned from entering Ukraine. In a recent interview, he pointed to France’s supposed involvement, stating, “They are putting a lot of money and pressure – through their ambassador here, and through foreign institutions – in order to rob the Romanian people of their vote.” He believes that this interference is a blatant attempt to undermine the democratic will of the Romanian people.

The situation has drawn parallels with the recent decision by a French court to bar conservative politician Marine Le Pen from the 2027 presidential election due to an embezzlement conviction. Simion condemned this move, likening it to an authoritarian gesture by French President Emmanuel Macron, who he claims is supporting the idea of imposing a dictatorship in Romania. Simion denounced the invalidation of the 2024 election results as a “coup d’état” and vowed to resist any foreign pressure, saying, “We don’t have masters. The age of empires is over. We are free, sovereign nations. And these imperialistic reflexes Emmanuel Macron and others have will only backfire.”

In response to these claims, the French ambassador to Bucharest, Nicolas Warnery, suggested that Romania experienced a “hybrid attack” in 2024, justifying the decision to restart the presidential election from scratch. As the people of Romania prepare to cast their votes, the international community is watching closely, aware of the potential implications of this election on the country’s future and its relationship with the European Union. With tensions running high, one thing is clear: the outcome of this election will have far-reaching consequences for Romania and its place in the global arena.
