In a heartfelt address to the graduating Class of 2025 at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emphasized the importance of patience and courage as essential virtues for success in life. As the founder of the Yola-based institution, Atiku drew from his personal experiences, sharing with the students how these qualities have been instrumental in his own journey.
Atiku recounted his struggles against military dictatorship, highlighting a pivotal moment when he was offered a governorship without an election, an offer he boldly rejected. He later became vice president in 1999, earning the position through legitimate means. This anecdote drove home his point that patience is not a sign of weakness, but rather a powerful tool for the wise. “I’ve faced tribulations,” he noted, underscoring the value of perseverance.
Education, according to Atiku, is the key driver of change, capable of transforming individuals and societies. The AUN, which he established in 2003, is designed with this principle in mind, aiming to equip young minds with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to make a positive impact in the world. The university’s mission is to foster a community of lifelong learners, prepared to navigate the complexities of an ever-changing global landscape.
Dr. DeWayne Frazier, the President (Vice Chancellor) of AUN, elaborated on the university’s unique approach, emphasizing its American-style education system. This model, he explained, is distinguished by its focus on entrepreneurship, providing students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for future careers. The emphasis on entrepreneurship is seen as a critical component, enabling graduates to not only secure employment but also to create jobs and drive innovation.
The graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone for more than 200 students, predominantly those who had completed undergraduate programs. As they embark on their next journey, the lessons imparted by Atiku and the educational foundation laid by AUN are poised to play a crucial role in shaping their futures. The event served as a testament to the power of education in transforming lives and societies, a message that resonates globally.
