Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced that his government will take decisive action against those responsible for the recent arson and destruction of public property in the state. This follows an incident where irate youths invaded Akarigbo Road in the Sagamu area, resulting in the destruction of several banks. The youths also targeted the Sagamu Local Government Secretariat, vandalizing property and stealing the mace of the legislative council.

On Tuesday, Governor Abiodun visited the affected areas to assess the damage. After his tour, he addressed the media, expressing his shock at the extent of the destruction, which he deemed excessive and unrelated to the naira redesign or swap policy. He stated, “I am here to have an on-the-spot assessment of what happened about the protest that rocked Sagamu yesterday.” He highlighted his visits to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, the local government secretariat, and the banks on Akarigbo Road, noting, “What I have seen here breaks my heart. I am speechless. It was supposed to be a protest, but what I have seen here indicates sinister objectives.”

The governor reported that the office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and the Local Government Secretariat had been vandalized, with damages amounting to millions of naira. He also mentioned that hoodlums attempted to steal computers and cash from the banks. Abiodun emphasized that his administration would pursue anyone associated with these crimes, stating, “We are going after any person that either directly or indirectly associates with this hideous crime. We will apprehend them, and they will face the full wrath of the law as a deterrent to others.”

Despite the violence that erupted during the EndSARS protests two years ago, Governor Abiodun noted that Ogun State had remained relatively peaceful. He commended the security forces for their swift response to the recent unrest and urged residents to continue their daily activities peacefully.
