The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, emphasized that the interests and protection of the state are paramount and that he will not mislead the people of Rivers regarding his political decision on which presidential candidate to support on Saturday. He made this assertion on Thursday while inaugurating several road projects in the Port Harcourt Local Government Area.
The first project Wike inaugurated was the dual‑carriageway Azikiwe/Iloabuchi Road at the Ojoto Roundabout in Mile 2, Diobu, Port Harcourt. Additional projects included the reconstructed and rehabilitated Edeokia/Femie/Aeroplane Drive, the Okuru Junction to Abuloma Jetty Road, and other related works.
Wike reminded political office holders and those in positions of trust that when people confide in them, they must use the opportunity to improve their constituents’ lives. “When you have an opportunity, when the people give you their confidence, you must also make them happy,” he said. “You make them happy by providing things that change their environment, that better their lives, and that improve economic activities in their area.”
He noted that the people of Rivers have given him great opportunities in both his private life and political career. “For what Rivers State has given me, I owe the Rivers people a lot, and I will continue to protect their interests. I am not going to sell Rivers State to anyone for a pot of porridge. If I tell you this is the right place, know that it is the right place. I will not deceive you; I am not one of those leaders who run around for personal interest.”
Wike warned the public to be wary of leaders who create crises and violence instead of fostering opportunities. In his address, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Dr. George‑Kelly Alabo, said the dual‑carriageway Azikiwe/Iloabuchi Road was completed in six months, improving the area’s aesthetics, altering the socioeconomic dynamics, and easing vehicular traffic flow.
