Tinubu’s Administration Boosts Road Safety with Increased Funding and Technology

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has experienced significant advancements in funding, technology, and operational reach, thanks to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, this support has been instrumental in reducing road crashes and will help the country achieve its goal of halving road-traffic deaths by 2030.

In an interview, Mohammed expressed his gratitude for the administration’s “massive support” for road safety, which has led to a 10% decrease in reported crashes in 2024. However, he noted that fatalities have increased due to secondary incidents such as fuel scooping at tanker crash sites. Mohammed emphasized the importance of avoiding risky behavior, especially at accident scenes, where primary crashes often do not result in fatalities, but secondary activities can lead to increased harm.

The FRSC has also seen improvements in technology, with the introduction of a one-stop mobile application that warns drivers and passengers when a vehicle exceeds prescribed speed limits. The app also flags black spots, dangerous bends, and potholes, and is continually updated as road conditions change. Additionally, the corps has rolled out the National Crash Information Reporting System, which unifies data from all security and emergency agencies, eliminating duplication and providing a reliable database.

Mohammed credited the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, led by Sen. George Akume, for its prompt action and support in releasing budgets and responding to the corps’ needs. He emphasized that the administration’s backing has been crucial in making Nigeria’s roads safer and reducing road traffic crashes by 50% by 2030.

The FRSC Corps Marshal urged continued public collaboration, stressing that road safety is a collective responsibility. With the improved technology and support from the administration, the corps is working towards achieving its mandate and making Nigeria’s roads safer for all citizens. As Mohammed noted, “We are grateful for the president’s backing and will keep pushing until our roads are safer for all Nigerians.”
