Mauritius Government to Recruit 2245 Scavengers and Manual Workers in Transparent Process

Major Recruitment Drive Launched in Mauritius to Fill 2,245 Vacancies

In a significant move to address the shortage of scavengers and manual workers in Mauritius, the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) has announced the recruitment of 2,245 workers, with vacancy notices being advertised from today. This announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Paul Raymond Bérenger, during a press conference at the National Assembly in Port Louis. The recruitment exercise is expected to be carried out in a transparent and merit-based manner, with the LGSC ensuring that each position is filled through a fair and competitive selection process.

The move comes after the government faced criticism for the unlawful recruitment of 1,463 manual workers last year, which was approved solely by the former Chairperson of the LGSC without following statutory procedures. The Deputy Prime Minister condemned this practice, stating that it was "illegal and unjust towards those who deserved these jobs." However, in a bid to rectify the situation, the government has decided to allow these workers to reapply for the positions, along with other eligible candidates.

To ensure a smooth transition, the government has pledged to provide full financial and administrative support to Municipalities and District Councils pending the recruitment of the new workers. A sub-committee comprising Ministers Bhagwan, Nagalingum, Woochit, and Gondeea has been set up to address the issue of the unlawful recruitment, and the Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, has been briefed on the committee’s progress.

The recruitment drive is a significant step towards addressing the shortage of workers in the local government sector and ensuring that public services continue to function efficiently. With the government’s commitment to transparency and fairness, the process is expected to be free from any irregularities, and the selected candidates will be appointed based on their merit and qualifications. As the recruitment process gets underway, the people of Mauritius can expect improved public services and a more efficient waste management system.
