Benue State Celebrates Unprecedented Transformation in Basic Education Under Governor Alia

SUBEB lauds Gov Alia’s strides in education, reveals two years of transformative governance

In a significant acknowledgement of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s efforts to transform the education sector in Benue State, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has applauded his administration for achieving “unprecedented transformation” in just two years. This transformation has been marked by a series of reforms and strategic interventions aimed at revitalizing the state’s basic education sector.

At the heart of these reforms are sweeping changes in infrastructure, including the renovation and construction of schools, provision of classroom furniture, and the installation of water and hygiene facilities across the state. According to Dr. Grace Adagba, Executive Chairman of SUBEB, these efforts have not only improved learning environments but also restored dignity to public education, which had faced years of neglect. “The Governor’s commitment to revitalising Benue’s education sector is visible in the massive renovation and construction of school infrastructures, provision of classroom furniture, and installation of water and WASH facilities in schools across the state,” she noted.

One of the key aspects of Governor Alia’s approach has been the introduction of a transparent e-payment system for teachers, aimed at ensuring prompt and efficient payment of salaries. Additionally, large-scale training programs for teachers, deployment of instructional materials, and the creation of digital and non-digital libraries have been implemented to enhance the quality of education. These initiatives, Dr. Adagba emphasized, are “bold steps that reaffirm this government’s dedication to quality education, literacy, and digital inclusiveness for all.”

The Alia administration has also made significant strides in reviving sports and creative arts in schools, recognizing the importance of a well-rounded education. Furthermore, the recruitment of thousands of new teachers through a credible computer-based testing process underscores the government’s commitment to improving the human capital development in the state. As Dr. Adagba pointed out, “This is a government that understands education as the cornerstone of human capital development. From paying salaries and pensions promptly to implementing a new minimum wage and restoring nursery sections in public schools, Governor Alia is building a solid foundation for the future.”

The construction of modern storey buildings equipped with whiteboards, replacing outdated chalkboards, has been hailed as a symbol of the paradigm shift introduced by the Alia administration. This shift towards modernizing education infrastructure is part of a broader effort to prepare the next generation for the challenges of the 21st century.

As Benue State looks to the future, there is optimism that the current trend of progress will continue. Dr. Adagba expressed her hope for “continued strength, wisdom, and grace to lead Benue State to even greater heights.” The recognition of Governor Alia’s achievements by SUBEB serves as a testament to the impact of visionary leadership and the potential for transformative change in the education sector when political will is matched with purposeful action.
