A Federal High Court in Abuja has reaffirmed an order to maintain the status quo concerning the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national convention, scheduled for 15‑16 November in Ibadan, Oyo State. Justice James Omotosho warned that any attempt to flout the order or undermine the court’s decision would trigger consequential actions.

The judge’s remarks followed a complaint by PDP lawyer Chris Uche, who sought a speedy hearing because the status‑quo order was constraining the party. Justice Omotosho assured that the court would deliver its judgment by the end of October, allowing the parties to know their fate.

The suit was filed by three PDP members—Austin Nwachukwu, Amah Abraham Nnanna, and Turnah Alabh George—and seeks to stop the planned convention, at which new national officers are expected to be elected. The defendants include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP, and several party officials.

Justice Omotosho has set a definitive hearing for 20 October, after confirming that all necessary processes have been filed. The parties are ordered to exchange their filed processes by 17 October to facilitate the hearing. Additionally, the judge instructed the two lawyers claiming to represent the PDP, Kamaldeen Ajibade and Chris Uche, to submit their papers so the court can determine the party’s proper legal representation.

By maintaining the status quo, the court ensures that no party takes steps that could render the eventual judgment ineffective. This development underscores the importance of respecting the legal process and awaiting the court’s decision, which is expected to clarify the fate of the PDP’s national convention. With the hearing set for 20 October, the outcome will likely have significant implications for the PDP’s future.
