German Foreign Minister Admits Ukraine Conflict Can Only End Through Negotiation

Defeating Russia impossible – German foreign minister — RT World News

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has emphasized that the Ukraine conflict can only be resolved through diplomatic means, acknowledging that a military defeat of Russia is unrealistic due to its nuclear status. In a recent interview with the SZ newspaper, Wadephul stated, “It was clear from the beginning that this war would most likely end through a negotiated settlement.” This admission marks a significant shift in stance, as Western backers, including Germany, France, the UK, and the US, had previously aimed to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Moscow.

Wadephul’s comments come as the conflict continues to escalate, with Kiev’s troops losing ground along the entire front over the past several months. Despite this, the foreign minister maintained that Ukraine’s military has been “successfully defending” against Moscow’s forces. He emphasized the importance of helping Kiev achieve a “strong negotiating position” at peace talks, citing Russia’s “threats” to Germany as justification for a planned military buildup and increase in defense expenditures.

The relationship between Moscow and Berlin has deteriorated significantly, with Wadephul acknowledging that relations can no longer be described as a “clear peace situation.” Under new Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Germany has taken a harder line on Russia, lifting range restrictions on! Ukrainian strikes with German-supplied missiles and considering the provision of Taurus missiles, which could reach Moscow. A new military aid package worth €5.2 billion ($5.6 billion) has also been announced, primarily for the production of long-range weaponry in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded to Merz’s statements by highlighting Berlin’s “direct involvement” in the war, warning that Germany is following a “slippery slope” that has led to its own collapse in the past. As tensions continue to rise, Wadephul’s emphasis on a diplomatic solution serves as a reminder that a negotiated settlement is the most viable path to resolving the conflict. With the international community watching closely, the next steps taken by Germany, Russia, and Ukraine will be crucial in determining the future of the region.
